Episode 45: Be an Active Participant in Your Life with Indie Lee

After surviving a successful surgery on Earth Day 2009 (yes, really.), Indie Lee embarked upon a new journey - a clean beauty collection dedicated to inspiring and empowering others to be mindful about what they put on their skin as well as into their body.

About Indie

“You have six months to live.”

This is what countless medical professionals told Indie Lee after she was diagnosed with a life threatening brain tumor in 2008. Doctors felt that the tumor could be environmentally derived and attributed to something as simple as what she was putting on her skin.

This was her awakening.

After surviving a successful surgery on Earth Day 2009 (yes, really.), she embarked upon a new journey - a clean beauty collection dedicated to inspiring and empowering others to be mindful about what they put on their skin as well as into their body. “When I was given a finite amount of time to live, the world became technicolor - I now appreciate every moment and I feel very fortunate to be creating a platform that will allow others to do the same. Education and empowerment are my driving forces and this line is the medium enabling me to pay my knowledge forward.” -Indie

Today, Indie works with some of the world’s leading chemists and formulators who share her vision for the beauty and wellness industry, working to bring the cleanest, most efficacious formulas and products to market. She has spoken about her mission at events such as SXSW and PopSugar Play/Ground. She also serves on the FIDM Beauty Program’s Advisory Council. It is her sincere hope that her awakening creates change and inspires others to make healthier choices.

Courage Up Moment

November 4th, 2008, she had just got to the doctor two hours before said she was losing her vision. They sent her in to get an MRI and called her to tell her to come into the office. The moment that changed everything for her was driving from her house to her doctor’s office. It was a beautiful fall day. She realized the 37 years up til that point, she was a passenger in her life and not an active participant. Every day from that day forward she would live with purpose, passion, and fully present. That day life became technicolor.

Skincare

When she showed up to the doctor she asked how this could happen. The doctor asked “what are you putting on your skin?” That was a moment she started to create and use clean beauty products. She had created it for her nephew because she didn’t want his skin to have anything that wasn’t natural, and now she thought about it with adults too. Creating this skincare line can help her educate people why and what happened to her. It wasn’t about skin care, more about to live life fully because every moment you live in choice.

Skincare Recommendations

Transition to Clean Skincare

One product at a time. Even though it’s natural, you could still have an allergy to it. Indie is all about sustainability. When you’re running low, that's the right time to switch over.
